Port Brewing Hop 15 Ale

IMG_9312Judging from the label of this brew I expect it to be a hop bomb.  But at 10% ABV, I’m wondering if Lindsey Lohan and Charlie Sheen should be coming out of these airplanes instead of little hops.  I’m curious.  Let’s do the numbers…  Oh wait!  This beer is from Port Brewing.  It’s called Hop-15.  NOW let’s do the numbers…IMG_9318

Appearance: Lighter in color than the pictures would suggest (more golden than brown) and a little murky.  I was surprised of the fluffy off white head given the amount of booze in here; the head also left a nice lacing on the glass as I drank.

Smell:  Floral and piney hops, sugars, mango.  Smells like I’m going to like it.  It can only go downhill from here…

Taste:  When I took my first sip, the most noticeable trait of this brew was it’s alcohol – it’s very ferocious and distinctive.  Accompanied with the alcohol is a syrupy mouthfeel that coats the palate stifling the subtleties of the hop flavors in the brew.  Sure, you get the typical piney and bitterness that comes from any IPA, but I have to say the smell of this beer was far more interesting than the taste.  In addition to the Charlie Sheen massive alcohol taste in this beer, I do get some mundane grains that are pretty light.  I’m really trying to find something from the hops in here, IMG_9296but I can’t.

Overall:  Well, not much to say here other than it’s disappointing.  I had high hopes for Hop-15, but didn’t think it was all that great.  On the other hand, I am 5 sips away from finishing it at this point and can feel the effects.  That’s a redeeming quality.  However, when push comes to shove I’m giving this a B.  I know that seems high given the taste, but it was relatively easy to finish for 10% and showed tremendous effort… like Tim Tebow (where I suspect the 15 comes from in Hop-15).  Is it an IPA that will win the Superbowl?  No.  Will it get you to the playoffs and generate a lot of fan buzz?  Yes.
